Dr. Terry is pleased to be one of approximately 400 dentists in this country to provide Perioscopy to his patients. Perioscopy is an advanced, non-surgical procedure to treat localized periodontal disease. If you have selective pockets that are over 5mm, then you may be a candidate. This means there are no stitches, cutting, or prolonged healing. Dentistry has now joined other medical fields in adopting a minimally invasive treatment that can take the place of surgery in some cases. Fiberoptic technology (endoscopy) has helped medicine in the areas of arthroscopy, laparoscopy, and gall bladder surgery to name a few. A tiny camera is used to view the diseased root surfaces. Special miniaturized instruments are then utilized to remove plaque and calculus from areas of the root that in the past could only be seen during surgery. The key to periodontal treatment is to clean the root. Now we can often do this without the cutting, stitching, and limitations of surgery.
With Perioscopy, the root surface is magnified up to 48 times its actual size! As the camera goes under the gum, we can follow the contours of the root to the point where the disease is hiding and remove it. Our highly trained hygienists usually do Perioscopy with local anesthetic.
When deep pockets are generalized, Perioscopy is usually not utilized.
Once the local anesthetic wears off, there are no limitations. There may be some slight tenderness of the treated area for a few days, which is easily managed with Tylenol or Advil. However, most patients find they do not need any medication at all.
Perioscopy will not reduce the pocket as well as surgery. However, there are times when we are more concerned with removing the irritants (plaque and calculus) causing the disease than pocket depth reduction.
Perioscopy usually costs about one third less than a surgical procedure. Fees will also vary with case complexity and the number of teeth being treated.
Most dental insurance companies will not provide benefits for Perioscopy. It is a newer, advanced technology provided by very few offices and it will take years before they will even consider coverage. However, we find most patients will gladly pay “out of pocket” for a procedure that will allow them to avoid surgery. As with all treatment at our office, the staff will be glad to discuss financial arrangements with you.
If you have selective pockets that are over 5mm, then you may be a candidate. The reason a pocket develops is because there is bacteria and calculus that is unreachable. Removing this irritant is the key factor to healing and preventing tooth loss. When deep pockets are generalized, Perioscopy is usually not utilized.

You can generally resume your normal diet, avoiding very hard, chewy foods.
This will depend on the area being treated. Front teeth usually have the best pocket depth reduction. This is because they only have one root. Back teeth have two or three roots and do not get the same level of reduction. However, there are times when we are more concerned with removing the irritants (plaque and calculus) causing the disease than pocket depth reduction. Of course, each person heals differently.
Perioscopy or surgery are the only techniques to effectively clean the root in a pocket that has become greater than 5mm.
Our highly trained hygienists usually do Perioscopy. Dr. Terry will comfortably administer a local anesthetic. Each session is approximately 2 hours long. Your treatment time may be shorter or longer depending on the complexity of your disease and the number of teeth being treated.
